Historic bronze Macarthur medal
Historic bronze Macarthur medal. We uncovered a few of these '60s-vintage commemorative medallions, struck in bronze, to honor General Douglas Macarthur. Still in the original packaging with certificate of authenticity and story card. Obverse features a portrait of Macarthur in high relief. Reverse is emblazoned with the famous quotes "I shall return" and "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away." Shipwrecked 1809 copper coin
Shipwrecked 1809 copper coin. In 1809, the H.M.S. Admiral Gardner broke up during a heavy gale off the coast of England. She was bound for India and loaded with newly minted copper coins. Amazingly, 175 years later, these coins were recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic. Still in exceptional condition – the East India Company coat of arms on the obverse and the Mughul script on the reverse are still clearly visible. Rare 2,000-year-old Kushan coin. 2,000 years ago, the Kushan Empire controlled the region stretching from India to Afghanistan, including the strategic Khyber Pass. These bronze coins depict images influenced by Greek, Indian and Chinese travelers. Catherine the Great, copper coin
Betcha 5 kopecks nobody ever said "Kiss me, Kate" to Catherine the Great, Tsarina of Russia from 1762 to 1796! Minted in the 1760s-1770s, these huge (1¾"/43 mm diameter, 1.5 oz./45 gm) copper coins show a scripted "E" and "T" (for "Ekaterina Tsarina") on the front. Romanov double-headed eagle, surrounding St. George slaying the dragon, on back. With letters "E" and "M" (for Ekaterina Mint, where the Czar's family was imprisoned during the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917). Numismatic experts say these were hoarded in barrels, which accounts for their Very Fine condition. Revolution certificates of exchange, framed
During the 1917 Russian Revolution, Alexander Kerensky's provisional government was established in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) to maintain law, order and the banking system. The government lasted only a few months, but in this brief time, it managed to gain British backing to issue these beautiful £5000 sterling certificates of exchange. Each certificate is comprised of two 13"x5" documents, printed in English. They're a veritable walk through history; each features a dozen or so stamps, seals, endorsements, colorful lithographed emblems, hand-written notes and signatures from famous banks and investment brokers of the day. Silver "pieces of eight" coin
Silver "pieces of eight" coin. These genuine eight reales were a favorite plunder of pirates, from the Caribbean to the South Pacific. They were often cut into eighths to make change, hence the name "pieces of eight". Ours were discovered, uncut, in a washed-up chest, on a beach in Southeast Asia. Obverse features the portraits of Spanish kings; reverse is embossed with crest of Spain. They're even dotted with Asian counter-stamps from their mysterious journey to the Far East. Minted in Mexico during the late-18th to early-19th centuries. Each weighs about 27g and is 38-40mm. Comes in a presentation case with certificate of authenticity. British Colonial Indian rupees
5 British Colonial Indian rupees. The first silver rupees, bearing the portraits of British monarchs, were minted in Bombay in the mid-1800s. During the next century and a half, most of these early coins disappeared. In a recent stroke of luck, we unearthed a small cache of these rare coins. 30mm. Napoleon laureate coin
When Napoleon's army marched against Russia in 1812, these coins were known throughout Europe as "Napoleons." After the Russians thwarted Napoleon's world conquest, these coins virtually disappeared (the vast majority were melted down or hoarded away). We discovered a small cache of these historic coins and are pleased to pass this marvelous find on to you. Each contains 6.45 grams of .900 pure gold.
