Three-arm protractor
These classic, three-arm protractors, vintage '60s-'80s and straight off decommissioned warships, operate using the principle of landmark triangulation. They were a primary back-up method of determining a ship's position during the Cold War. (Navigators trained to use them in the event of nuclear electromagnetic pulse or when all the fancy, high-tech equipment was otherwise unavailable.) Intricately machined chrome steel over brass frame with dual micrometer knobs for precision adjustments. Serial numbered. Sextant
For thousands of years, sailors have navigated by the sun and stars. In 1699, Isaac Newton discovered the principle of measuring angles by double reflection and constructed an instrument to do so. Today, although navigation is done largely with GPS, no self-respecting mariner would be without a sextant. We found a handful of mil-spec Soviet-era sextants in a Navy supply depot. Modeled after units produced by Carl Plath of Hamburg, Germany (the Mercedes-Benz of sextants). Produced in `50s-`80s and in excellent condition, each complete with a 4x40 telescope, (shown) or with a Galiean/atronomical telescope (used for solar sightings), horizon/index mirrors, filters, micrometer scale. Genuine WWII-era Swiss courier bicycle
"Cling, cling" goes the bell as the courier pulls up on his trusty bicycle, the magneto-driven front and rear lights beaming. "Message for you, sir," he says slipping off the spring-cushioned, grain-leather saddle. He produces a telegram from one of the many pockets in the frame-mounted, weather-proof, leather courier bag. The message bears the esoteric inscription "The Kettle is on the stove", which signals that your top secret mission is a "go". With a pump of the oversized pedals, the courier is off, the bike's vintage Swiss license plate disappearing in the Alpine fog. Complete with hand and foot brakes, leather tool case, rear wheel lock, sealed bearings and tire pump. In outstanding condition, considering they saw service more than half a century ago (sure to provide faithful service for generations to come). An extraordinary display piece, too. Swiss Ducati motorcycle
70s-era Swiss "Condor" Ducati motorcycle. In the early '70s, the Swiss Army tapped the venerable Italian motorcycle paragon, Ducati, to craft a military bike that could handle the rigors of the Alps. The solid frame and punchy 350 cc kick-start engine they engineered took on the twisting mountain roads of Switzerland like a champ. When we discovered a few of these well-maintained, but virtually forgotten "Condor" bikes nested away in a Cold War-era warehouse, we nearly popped a wheelie. Designed for solo dispatches and liaison duties, they feature dual saddlebags and even a rifle rack. Ready for the road with headlight, turn signals and mirrors. Produced from 1973 to 1978, they're street-legal based on classic vehicle laws.
