This pair of charming Victorian greenhouse terrariums make for a low maintenance way to display and protect your favorite potted plants. The terrariums are surrounded by glass on all sides, including the pitched roof and are small enough to place on your desk, table or shelf. And while we're on the roof, you can easily open it up to access the interior as you place and remove plants or small decorative items. Metal frames with a faux copper finish secure the glass and also serve as a base for the vintage inspired terrariums. Handles attached to the roof make it easy to move the Victorian terrariums around your home as needed.
Did you know terrariums were first invented in the mid-1800s by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, a botanist and physician from England during the Victorian era. Ward was studying the life cycle of moths and had placed a chrysalis in a jar when he noticed that a fern spore that had accidentally fallen into the jar had grown into a small plant. He realized that the sealed jar created a microclimate that allowed the plant to thrive, and thus the idea of the terrarium was born.
